How Skywards works

Skywards is fairly simple once you separate reward miles from status miles. Reward value comes from Skywards Miles, while status comes from Tier Miles earned on eligible flights.

Partner spend earns Tier Miles

Where miles usually come from

  • Emirates and flydubai flights earn both Skywards Miles and Tier Miles.
  • Emirates-marketed partner flights can also earn Tier Miles at the same rates as Emirates flights.
  • Hotels, car rentals, shopping, and co-branded cards earn Skywards Miles only, not Tier Miles.

Tier qualification

How status is earned

Silver and Gold can be reached with Tier Miles or flight counts. Platinum is more demanding because it also requires at least one qualifying Business or First Class flight.

Program rules

The details worth remembering

Skywards is especially sensitive to expiry rules, so the small details matter more here than in some other airline programs.

Miles expiry

Skywards Miles are valid for three years and usually expire at the end of your birth month in the expiry year. Account activity does not extend them.

Platinum exception

Skywards Miles do not expire for Platinum members while they hold Platinum status.

Family pooling

My Family lets up to eight family members pool Skywards Miles for faster redemptions.

Flexible redemptions

Cash + Miles helps when your balance is short, and miles can also be used for upgrades at check-in or on board when eligible.

FAQ

Quick answers

Short answers to the main questions most readers have before deciding whether Skywards is worth chasing.

What is Emirates Skywards?

Emirates Skywards is the loyalty program for Emirates and flydubai. It uses Skywards Miles for rewards and Tier Miles for status.

How do you qualify for Gold?

Gold requires 50,000 Tier Miles or 50 qualifying flights in a rolling 12-month period, and the same threshold again to retain it.

What makes Gold useful?

Gold is usually the most practical tier because it adds a strong mileage bonus, worldwide lounge access with a guest, free Economy seat selection, and priority airport treatment.

Do partner transactions earn Tier Miles?

No. Partner spend such as hotels, shopping, and credit cards earns Skywards Miles only. Tier Miles come from eligible flights.

Do Skywards Miles expire?

Yes. Standard Skywards Miles expire after roughly three years based on your birth month and are not extended by account activity.
